More Shazam

It's not easy being green, or getting a renewal when you're an original broadcast game show. But The Wall survived to a second season, and now so has Beat Shazam. Fox has re-upped the app-based music fest.

I said it's an original game show, but Beat Shazam is really a kind of reboot of Name That Tune. Still, they didn't have mobile apps back then, so I guess we can call this a new format. The show has drawn decent numbers, and Fox particularly likes its social media presence. They didn't have social media back in the Name That Tune days, either.

I think the show is surprisingly watchable, though the guest stars seem a little superfluous. But the names might bring in some viewers, and that's what counts with the Nielsen Company. There's no word on when the second season will debut, though Jamie Foxx will return as host. There's also no word on a renewal for Love Connection, which has lagged behind Beat Shazam in the ratings.

  1. I think Fox liked the demos it put up, so it was a easy renewal I guess.

Non related, but with Wheel finishing third in the syndie ratings, Sony outta be concerned. Sure a 5.3 is good, but when you have a year to year drop you have to do something. Can't believe I'm saying this, but add another run.

    1. Already commented on Wheel in the ratings post. By the way, I just scrubbed a couple comments from hat putato, his usual spams about body functions and drinking games. If that guy ever has something original and non-spammy to contribute, I'll let it through. Otherwise, he's just wasting his time.

  2. Can anyone name any other Fox game show that got another season? "Family Double Dare" almost had one, but it was pulled due to creative differences.

  3. Greed got ratings good enough for a renewal in 2000, but still didn't get a second year. DItto Povich Twenty One on NBC around that time.

    1. Greed lasted longer than any of the other broadcast answers to Millionaire. Wikipedia says it had a respectable run of 44 eps.

Meanwhile, I'm having a lot of fun nuking the idiotic spam and nonsense from the alt.tv.g-s trolls. Just trashed some garbage about a "fidget spinner" (no, you don't want to know).

I have to admit, after all the crud they dumped on this blog, it's nice to send the trolls back to their hole. The party's over around here, guys.

    2. I really miss Greed. Of course, FOX would never bring that back, because it skews way too old in the demo. Same reason Million Dollar Password got canned. Personally I'd love to have 10 million viewers per episode, regardless of the age demo, but that's just me.

    3. At least FOX tries with their game shows. Beat Shazam isn't the greatest I've seen, but I've seen a lot worse. Speaking of the show, last night's episode had a 2.2 rating. That renewal is looking nice. And also, The Wall hit a season high last night as well. Nice when you have Talent as the lead in.

  4. This is indeed a watchable show, even if us geezers don't recognize half of the music. I liked the pacing, too...not as tortuous as others like 5th Grader.

  5. SOme of the music on 1984 Name that Tune was a bit older than 1984, granted, and we wouldn't necessarily have recognized that. Half of the music is 21st century on Shazam, going by the recaps of it alone, true

  6. True...even with the Tom Kennedy version I'm sure some were stumped.
