Get ready to match these stars

We now know some of the celebs for ABC's Match Game reboot. This story lists: Adam Goldberg, Ana Gasteyer, Bobby Moynihan, D.L. Hughley, Debra Messing, Edie Falco, Horatio Sanz, Isaac Mizrahi, J.B. Smoove, Jenna Fischer, Rosie O'Donnell, Sherri Shepherd, Sutton Foster and Tituss Burgess.

I recognize some of the names from the genre. Sherri and D.L. hosted game shows, though the latter probably wishes he could forget the effort (TBS's disastrous Trust Me, I'm a Game Show Host.) There are also a few players from Celebrity Name Game, which seems to be the AAA team for ABC's game shows this summer.

It's really hard to say how any of these folks will perform on the show, because Match Game is such an ensemble format. A celeb who tries too hard or hogs too much camera time can spoil everything. I assume the producers will sit pretty hard on somebody like Rosie O'Donnell, who might be inclined to a rant or three.

Alec Baldwin calls the proceedings to order on June 26. As Johnny Olson used to say, get ready.

  1. What I feared, a minor league ensemble. You've got to pull some strings if you want to sell the show in prime time these days. These are celebs I'd expect for a syndicated version.

There are only a couple of names I don't recognize, and most of the folks on there aren't exactly hot commodities right now. I get it, you won't get big names across the board, but it feels like a gathering of celebrities with nothing better to do than celebrities who are relevant. The old MG was that way, but it wasn't trying to pull in prime time ratings.

Good panelists are what matters, ultimately, but I expect I'm going to be disappointed by this show one way or another.

  2. And they got Betty White for To Tell the Truth, but not for Match Game? For shame!

  3. Debra Messing was on Jeopardy just last season & appears on TV shows

  4. ROsie O'Donnell makes one reach for the remote control. She used to be funny, then went nasty and unfunny. She's toxic on television...heck she had a variety show canceled in the middle of its first airing.

    1. She's also an extreme SJW. (Social Justice Warrior)

    2. Oh God. I can't stand Social Justice Warriors.

  5. You can't expect the A-list on a cheap summer game show. But I don't mind the absence of huge names. Who knew Brett and Charles when the 1973-82 Match Game started?

Funny note: I just discovered that Game Show Newsnet used exactly the same title for their post on this subject. Only they put THESE in all caps. (The site uses the caps lock key a lot.) It was pure coincidence, I swear.

  6. No, you can't expect A-listers, but I'd argue ABC could have pulled together a better collection of celebs than a bunch of unbusy comedic types. No, Brett and Charles weren't household names, but again, they weren't trying to sell the show to a prime time audience 40+ years ago.

Get anybody from ABC's most popular sitcom on the air, Modern Family, anybody of note from their morning gab fest, anybody who is a close personal friend of Baldwin. Will that make the difference in the ratings, probably not, but it will draw more interest in the show than something called J.B. Smoove.

I had little hope for this show when it was announced. These stars haven't changed my opinion.

    1. They're trying to sell a cheap summer show in a fractured TV universe where a 1.0 18-49 rating can mean survival. I'd argue that ABC needs less star power on this version than CBS needed back in the 1970s, when network television commanded a far larger part of the viewing audience. (Just about all of the viewing audience, in fact.)

And if you prejudge shows sight unseen, why bother watching TV at all?

    2. quite the contrary, actually.

  7. Since I wasn't around in 73 I was wondering that. But I didn't think they were huge marquee names either.

    1. at this point, it's who is going to be a good fit for Match Game. I would make Rosie a rotation in the 6th seat. Debra Messing into the 2nd (the memorial Brett Somers Hot Mess Seat). I would give Sutton Foster another chance. JB smooth is a disaster. And Bring back the Star Wheel.
