Ratings: August closes blah

We're grinding through the final weeks of syndie game show reruns as August limps to a close. There wasn't much movement anywhere for the week of August 24-30. TV News Check has the dull household ratings...

Family Feud 6.1 - down a tick but manages to hang onto the top spot
Wheel of Fortune 6.0 - up a tick to beat the Sony soulmate
Jeopardy 5.7 - flat
Millionaire 1.7 - flat, yawn
Celebrity Name Game 1.2 - down a tick and I'm getting worried

Single-run Pat and Vanna still bagged their usual win in viewer average, says TV by the Numbers. Wheel of Fortune 9.5M (weekend repeat 3.9M), Family Feud 9.0M, Jeopardy 8.5M. Will Millionaire ever return to TVBTN's top 25 list? We'll see in the new season with Chris Harrison.

GSN endured its worst week in a while for August 31-September 6, TV Newser reports. 380K/285K/407K viewers prime time/total day/extended prime time. GSN ranked 43rd, 35th and 42nd in the windows. The Steampunk'd disaster didn't help.

And in offbeat ratings news CNN Quiz Show was the network's second most-watched show for September 7. The show did skew old, even by CNN's geriatric standards. The curse of the genre, though I get in trouble with some people for daring to mention it.

    1. Simmer down for Christ sake. He'll post them when he gets them.

Saying it like that is NOT going to make them come any faster.

    2. I posted a revised September 14-20 pdf. GSN hasn't sent out the schedule for September 21-27 yet. I'll post it when they send it.

    4. Just got the schedule for September 21-27 and posted it. The cover e-mail says there are no changes. I really don't keep close track of the schedule any more, so I'll take their word for it.

  3. "Will Millionaire ever return to TVBTN's top 25 list? We'll see in the new season with Chris Harrison."

No, because a lot of Millionaire's slots get demoted big.

    1. Millionaire barely missed the top 25 this week. A 1.8 rating was good enough to make the list, while Crews got 1.7. If Harrison lifts the numbers at all, Millionaire could creep back onto the list.

It's funny how people have been predicting doom for Millionaire for years now. Well, one of these years the doomsayers will be right.

By the way, it's tricky predicting how timeslot changes will affect a syndie. Celebrity Name Game got demoted big time in many markets in the middle of its first season, and the numbers didn't really suffer, at least initially. Sometimes softer competition in the demoted slots can work to a show's advantage.

Anyway, I'm a lot more worried about CNG than Millionaire. The numbers have been drooping lately, down to this week's 1.2. It's a cheap show but after a while the numbers start looking pretty bad.

    2. I predict that this upcoming season of "Millionaire" will be its last. The show ran its course a long time ago.

As for CNG, it still airs weeknights at 6:30pm on CW 69 here in Atlanta, leading in to a full hour of Harvey's "Feud". Atlanta is the 9th largest TV market according to Neilsen.

    3. You ain't the only one predicting doom for Millionaire, and they've been predicting it for years. But it remains significantly higher rated than Celebrity Name Game, which got downgraded in a whole bunch of markets, including my home DFW area.

CNG just couldn't handle the access hour competition. I'm not sure it can handle the competition anywhere. The ratings have been sinking further into the low ones. I'm more worried about Craig's show than about Millionaire.

    4. I agree with Kevin. I just don't see an upside for Millionaire after years of decline.

    5. I may watch the first episode of Millionaire of the season since they are kind of going back to the way Millionaire was played before.

In my market, Millionaire will air this season at 1am. I'll have to record it. But yeah, talk about a death slot. I don't know about other markets, but the show is scattered around and changes timeslots almost every year it seems like that some people just can't keep up with the show moving around.

Over the years in Sacramento/Stockton/Modesto (my TV market), the show has been on 4:30pm, 11:30am, 2:00pm, 2:30pm, 3:00pm, so around here the show has hardly kept a stable timeslot.

    6. In my home DFW market, the fifth largest in the country, the new season of Millionaire keeps the same slots it's always had on the CBS duopoly station: 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM. That may not be good for the show because it competes against Family Feud in the first slot and Wheel of Fortune in the second slot.

It was that kind of competition that chased away Celebrity Name Game to 1:00 PM in my market. The show has now been demoted again to the noon hour. CNG's national ratings are already in the low ones. If they slide any further, the show looks like a goner. Too bad, I like the lively Pyramid knockoff and Ferguson is a talented host. (Though he may be something of an acquired taste.)

    7. I like Craig Ferguson, liked his late night talk show, hadn't seen much of CNG, but what I have seen of it it's alright.
